Right now i want...

First off, a healthy congratulations to Apple for being named the most influential brand in the world. Seriously, how cool is that? We beat Google and Starbucks and... Al Jazeera? Let's just hope Osama Bin Laden still doesn't know show tunes...[as a side note, i'd like to thank fox for finally telling us that Family Guy's Season 4 will finally! start on May 1st And with episode titles like "Stewie B. Good," "8 Simple Rules for Buying My Teenage Daughter," "Petarded," and "The Cleveland-Loretta Quagmire" i'd say Mr. McFarlane has returned with a vengeance].

Secondly... or... wait, i think my numbering scheme broke down somewhere in that last paragraph. Oh well. Moving on.

Today marks the One Year Anniversary of my moving to California. Yep, that's right, a year ago today i was sobbing at the crack of dawn in the Smith Terminal of Detroit's Metro Airport never wanting my parents to tell me i couldn't go somewhere more in my life. It's been a long year, and i'm not even sure how i feel about it being a year already; suffice it to say, a year has indeed past and i have managed to not only survive out here, but to not quit, not run home, to ship my first application, to carve out a few nooks for myself, and to find a place i might actually be able to like for a while. And as long as i can keep finding my way back to New York and Ann Arbor every few months, i might actually be ok with this whole constant-weather thing.

...Today is also the last day of my first lease in california... which means i have to get back to that apartment and finish cleaning out the kitchen and give them back their keys cause i'm so over that place.

Before i sign off for the day i'd like to apologize for not posting much this month; to say that i've been busy is like saying Jupiter has a few thunder storms occasionally. I seriously feel like several months have past in the last three-ish weeks, and at this rate i'll be 35 before the year is out. But soon i'll be able to take a break from all the deadlines - work and personal, and just take a fucking break.

Maybe i should take Jet Blue up on their fare sale offer... hmm... now there's a fun thought :)

CA is the fourth region of the country in which I've lived. Each time I've moved, it's taken me about a year to stop feeling homesick or wondering why I decided to move. But then it gets better and eventually it feels like home.

It's been so long since I moved from where I grew up, that not only do I no longer feel homesick for it, but when I go back it seems like an alien land. :-)

I wonder if students thinking the press should be more restricted is akin to the widespread belief that US foreign aid is a much larger fraction of the budget than it really is?

i bet those are the same people who believe we aren't spending any money on education (over $400B) or that the civil rights movement coincided with the Emancipation Proclamation.

The current "average" level of education in this country should strike fear into the hearts of all of her citizens. We need to stop teaching towards the middle and start expecting more from our children. We need to stop rewarding teachers for simply surviving and start rewarding them for results - lord knows that performance is the way most other professional workers are judged. Parents need to stop blaming teachers and start involving themselves in their kids lives and educations. Art and Music programs need their funding increased instead of decreased. Federal money that is currently collecting interest in accounts for the states to use needs to be released for supplies and training. And most importantly, school board corruption and diversion of funds not only needs to be stopped, the people involved in it should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law; Detroit School Board, i'm talking to you.

... not that i have any opinions on the matter. Sorry, i got carried away, i'll stop my ranting now.

:) thanks for the link, Michael!
