We move slow around here

I should really check my mail more than twice a year. I checked it this morning on orders from my mother because my grandma sent my birthday card to my apartment instead of to the office and i don't want to miss it - i love the cards my grandma's send me.
I didn't realize, though, that i hadn't checked my mail since the end of July. Seriously, it can't have been that long. Well, it has been, but that's not the point, i feels like i checked it a couple of weeks ago - a month tops. Anyways.
So what did i find? A letter the IRS mailed me in July. Don't freak out - i already did that and found out i don't have to worry - so don't worry on my behalf. As long as eFile has existed i've done it... or, more correctly my mom has eFiled on my behalf. Last year i did my own taxes, however, so i was very very worried that i had screwed something up.
The letter from the Fresno IRS said that they didn't actually have my 2003 (phew!) 1040, which was odd because i remember writing them a terrifyingly large check for the time i had worked in the state. I also remember the lecture my mother gave me for doing my taxes so close to the deadline, so i was especially confused that those were the taxes they were missing.
So after tons of stressing and searching for a phone number to call to actually speak to a person, and after holding for the better part of 40 mins, i finally got a very nice lady on the line who explained that i wasn't in trouble.
Apparently that office of the IRS had issues with the eFiles from that year, and simply didn't get the file that was sent. But they did get my money - and - plesantly surprising - actually owe me money, so they know i paid. Since they owed me and not the other way around they took their fair time (a year and a half) to actually inform me of the paperwork issue. So my mom is sending me a printed copy of my taxes which i have to sign and send on to Fresno, then they will mail me (at work) a check.
How cool. How odd. How telling. The operator told me in her gently lilting southern tones that they worked slow at the IRS, at that's why it took them so long to notify me. That's not entirely true, though: they are amazingly speedy when you owe them money. It's just when they owe you that they choose to take the slow boat to China.
Though i have to admit, some extra cash right now would be nice - so i'm not really complaining. Well, that's if you don't count my 1) heart-attack over the letter, 2) the lack of information in the letter, 3) the lack of useful contact information on the IRS website, 4) the amount of time i had to spend on hold before i found the right number to actually call, 5) the amount of time holding in general, and finally 6) having to tell my mother i got a letter from the IRS and giving her a heart attack before i could explain.
Other than that, no complaints at all ;)
